Scale Generator is an app for generating musical scales in every key. It uses the "circle of fifths" as an innovative key selection tool, working like the classic scroll wheel of the old iPods (they got that from us you know!). Once you have the key you can optionally set other features of the scale you want:
How to use it
Select a key
The "circle of fifths" contains every scale key with the major keys on the outside of the circle and the relative minor keys o the inside.There are a number of ways to use the circle:
- Click on a key to select it (key is highlighted)
- Selecting a key also highlights the minor scale with the same root (e.g. selecting C major highlights C minor)
- Selecting a key will display the key signature below
- If more than one key is given in a circle sector (e.g. Gb and F#) you can select the secondary key by double clicking the sector
- You can use a long click on any key to immediatly generate the scale (using exsting settings)
Scale settings
You can use the settings area to determine the type of scale to generate.
- Clef: treble, Bass or alto - and whether it is OK to mix clefs for longer scales
- Scale type: regular, chromatic, dominant 7th, diminished 7th, natural minor, harmonic minor, melodic minor
- Scale pattern: Scale or arpeggio
- Octaves: 1 to 3
Scale notation
When you generate the scale, music for the scale is displayed full screen. If necessary this can be scrolled up and down. You can also reset the start note by double tapping the side of the screen:
- Tap left screen: push scale down one octave
- Tap right screen: push scale up one octave
- Swipe left or use the device back button to go back to the key select screen
