The Violin Tuner and Metronome app is, unsuprisingly, a free Android app that will help you tune your violin and help you keep your playing in time. It is designed to be simple and intuitive to use witout compromising on profressional level accuracy. It is ready to go right out of the box with no settings, regsitration or ads getting in the way. Just play and go!
The app has an accurate pitch detection feature for tuning that will listen to the note as you play and, if it is identified as an open string on the violin, it will highlight the string on the violin graphic along with the peg used to tune it. If the note is sharp of flat it will advise whicn way to turn the peg to get it back in tune.
You can choose to use either the main tuning pegs or the fine tuning pegs if you have those.
A pitch detection meter gives detailed information about the note being played, the frequency detected and how sharp or flat it is (measured as deviating from the closest detected note).
Take care when turning the tuning pegs, especially the main tuning pegs, as violin strings can break if over tightened.
It's important not to get too reliant on a digital tuner. When playing with groups you will be tuning to a note played on one of the instruments. So here you will rely on your ears to monitor the tuning process. The app provides the option to tune using generated sound tones (loke a tuning fork). This will help you practice tuning by ear. A tone can be selected for tuning each string although keep in mind when tuning in a group you will typically get just the A string sounded. You will need to tune the other strings relative to the tuned A string.
The tone generation relys on your device's capabilities for sound production. Make sure the device volume is adhusted appropriatly. Note that the lower frequencies (e.g. for the G string) can appear to be quiter than the higher frequencies. This may be a limitation of the smaller speakers and cabinate design of mobile devices that also priority some devices give to higher frequencies.
The metronome is designed to look, sound and interact like a classic metronome in a gourgeous wooden cabinate. You select the required beats per minute (BPM) by simply sliding the dial up and down the pendulum as you would with a real metronome. The BPM and the associated tempo (as used in classicial music notation) is displayed at the bottom. After pressing "START" the pendulum will swing to and fro at the selected tempo and an audible "tock" is sounded for each beat. Use the volume control on your device to adjust the volume.
The app is designed to run on an Android phone or tablet device.
The app is free
